Long story short - A few weeks ago one of my colleagues was dismissed from the company after several warnings and then an incident where he was deemed to have been negligent. I know this colleague well and often meet up with him socially outside of work (we have shared interests).

I was speaking to my manager last week about something unlreated and out of the blue she asked if I was interested in X position (the position that my colleague was dismissed from). I said yes thinking I didn't stand a chance. The interview was today and they've offered it to me! How on earth do I tell my friend/ex-colleague? I know they'll find out (through other staff) sooner or later so I'd rather it came from me (but not making a fuss or a big deal of it at the same time). This is awkward Blush

It's not awkward. You didn't dismiss them and took no role or part in that decision. Just tell them that you have been offered the role. Don't faff around with attempts to make excuses. You did nothing other than apply for a vacant position.

If your colleague had been temporarily filling the position, it was then advertised permanently and you got the job, that would be awkward. This isn’t! Your colleague knows the job is vacant. You applied for it. You got it. Not awkward!
