Travel time for training

Just looking for some advice please.

My partner is starting a new job next week which we really appreciate. He will be working in a local branch of this company which is 20minutes away using a train. However they have advised he needs to go for training to a further branch 1hour and 10minutes away for 2 weeks. This travel time is using a train.

Are companies to pay for travel time? They said they will pay for any travel expense meaning transport to work. So he will use a train. Another question if he had to get an Uber would that also be reimbursed back?

I have no idea without seeing the contract he's signed. However, most companies would not pay for the travel time, and would most certainly not pay for an Uber.

Hi OP. I've never seen a salaried position that would pay for travel time, but this might be more likely in hourly jobs - depends on his contract and the easiest way would be to ask his manager.

As for an Uber, if you mean instead of a train, then I doubt it! If you're talking about a "taxi from the train station to the office" kind of thing, then probably - although again, he'd need to ask.

Will vary company to company, but I can't see a company paying for a taxi for such a long journey, unless he can demonstrate that 4 people sharing that would be less than them paying for 4 x train fares or similar.

My organisation give TOIL for travel time. It really depends on their policy.

Your Q doesn't have a single answer, it will vary from org to org.

In my organisation, you wouldn't get paid for travel time but you would be reimbursed for travel costs. Then there is a policy around travel expenses and appropriate choice of mode of transport.

We get paid travel time minus your normal commute to work,so 50mins in your example.

We are on flexi so it isn't paid as such we just clock extra hours and take it back in lieu

I wouldn’t think they would pay for an Uber. It’s usually the price of a standard class train ticket or mileage if you’re driving. There’s no need to get an Uber if he can go by train!

My employer would pay me for the time spent travelling beyond the normal office, so I’d be able to claim back the extra 50 mins each way as toil/flexitime.

Travel expenses is usually travel as part of your job and not travel to and from your place of work
So my company would not pay for my travel to work but would pay if I then had to visit another site as part of my job
They have a mileage allowance but no way would that cover an Uber

Thank you for all your replies. The company have changed the location for training which makes it only 40minutes away now. After training where he will work is 20minutes away so not much difference. They have also advised they will be paying for the Travel Expense. Many thanks for all your replies

Most contracts will have a clause to vary the work location on an ad hoc basis. If someone's travelling for hours to get somewhere then they could ask for lieu time but 20 extra minutes I can't imagine any employer saying yes and it would create a really bad impression to ask IMO.
