Advice needed on rights re: time off for sick child

I've just gone back to work (haven't even done 2 weeks yet!) and ds is not eating and looking peaky. My staff handbook says I can have 3 days off a year but I'm sure I've read figures about how many days you can have before the child is 5. Are these days unpaid and are they split between both parents or days off each?
