National Careers Service

Have any of you used the National Careers Service, especially the face to face sessions with an advisor?

I was made redundant at the beginning of May. I work in a sector where job opportunities are limited so I’ve booked an appointment to talk through my skills and experience and to see what sort of other roles I could apply for. At the moment I’m only applying for a couple of jobs a week as I’ve been focusing on roles where I’m a 100% match to the person spec so I really could do with some help exploring other options.

If you’ve used the service, what did you think of it, and how can I best prepare for the session? I’ve just been told to bring a couple of CVs.

careers adviser here

National Careers Service is in England but in Scotland it is Skills Development Scotland.

It's not really about creating CVs for you or checking over your CVs. We talk about your career history, your career ideas and try to help you understand yourself, your skills and options.

It's called career "guidance"

Feel free to make contact with me. I do freelance career coaching. I do check CVs too but mainly career coaching.
