Potential promotion dilemma

Hoping someone may be able to help me out here.

Been with my employer a year, previous 10 years. Progression at previous employer very slow, current employer has better progression generally just not really in my current department.

I applied for another role internally that would require training as it’s a different role but not unmanageable and I am interested in it. Ideally however I would rather progress to management but was of the opinion that that opportunity was a long way off in my current department as manager hasn’t long been in that position and there was no suggestion they would be going anywhere any time soon.

Had interview for other role, interviewer really grilled me on whether a promotional position in my current department would sway my decision which I found odd but answered, not necessarily but I want to progress to management and if the position came up at the right time I’d of course consider it. All questions were management focused.

Day after interview my manager returns from holiday and informs me she is leaving, that if I applied for the position I’d have a strong chance of getting the job etc.

I’m still waiting to hear about this other job. Of the two the manager position would be my preference although no guarantee I’d get it of course.

Would you turn down the other job if offered it and aim for the management role or request to speak to interviewer who is also overall manager and have a very honest conversation? I’m keen to progress, I don’t want to burn bridges or cut my nose off to spite my face! Sorry for rambling!

Take the first job. Apply for the second and see how it goes. Make a decision at that point if it's relevant.

The risk with accepting the first job, because it's in the same organisation as the management role, they may decide they want to keep you there, and not give you the chance at the management role. They might give you an interview just to tick a box but not seriously consider you.

Impossible to predict. The honest conversation might give you a better chance of success.

Daisychain that is my worry. My best solution here I suppose could be that I don’t get offered the job I have just interviewed for and therefore the decision has been made for me.

I also wouldn’t want to move to a new department, take the position away from someone who may really want it to interview for something else before I have even moved across.

I think the honest conversation might be the only way forward!
