HE Admin & working hours..help needed

I work in HE Admin, I negotiated part time hours in what was advertised as a full time role, my contract states I work 6 hours per day, which is fine but my contract is also task based, so overtime etc is not payable. On occasions due to the nature of my role I have to do a full day, but I am not entirely sure whether I can claim back the additional hours as 'lieu time' or not when I work over ??
I have mentioned it in passing to another colleague and was basically told that there is nothing I can do..
There has been no redistribution of tasks based on my part time hours, so I kind if feel that although I am lucky enough to work part time hours I am losing out, because a full time person would just cover the full days as part of their normal working week.

Doesn't sound right. I would think you are due the time back. They may not describe it as 'in lieu', but they may agree that if you worked, say, 7 hours one day then you can go home an hour early the next day that it's convenient.

If you are contracted to work 6 hours per day, that's all you are being paid for. If you work extra hours you are giving away your time for free and are reducing your hourly rate.

Check with HR.

I found myself in a similar situation recently - I started a new job 32 hours a week, quickly found it’s not a 32 hours a week job so I upped my hours to full time. At least I’m getting paid for it now, it’s an extra £3k in my pocket per annum! It’s so annoying when there is no allowance for part time hours and they have that “well the work has to be done” attitude when you raise it. In my last job my work was pro rata to account for my part time hours.

I could have claimed the TOIL without any quibbles, but I’d rather have the money tbh.

I’m a senior manager in HE. In my area we would give some time back unofficially e.g. if supporting a late night or weekend event. It’s not done on an hour for hour basis though. There’s no paid overtime for staff above a certain grade although we have done short term amendments to contracts to cover times when pt staff have increased their hours to cover particular events/absences for 4 weeks plus.

HE admin is often suggested as a relatively easy option on MN but IME whilst PT is available there is rarely anyone to redistribute work to so the PT person just has to juggle. I don’t know anyone FT/PT who doesn’t regularly work additional hours. I’m writing this whilst on leave BTW, in case anyone asks why I can be on MN during work hours!
