I had a work situation and had initiated the grievance process. My union, then refused to support me, saying that barred me. I was quite traumatised at the time and didnt know that was a rule of theirs.

I have since asked to speak or the details of who my local rep is, they refuse to tell me, and refuse still even where I logged a complaint.

What can I do? The union is Prospect and I now do not recommend them, despite having been with them for 15 years! They have essentially "shut me down" and abandoned me.

My experience with Prospect has been excellent, including through a disciplinary last year. However, they have always been clear that they would only support a grievance if they felt there were grounds for it, which I think is standard for any union. Did you discuss it with them before submitting it? Your first post implies not.

I think in your case, I would put an email together and check on the website for an email at head office to see what your options are.

Are you still paying your membership fees? I would expect to get some response if I were still paying.

Hi, I didnt realise when i kicked off the process internally and then contacted them. I did explain why and that I was very stressed etc, suffering depression, etc. they refused to even discuss it. Wont even tell me who my rep is or let me speak to anyone.

So they have not made any assessment of the matter either, just totally cut off and abandoned. Logged a complaint about it and asked to know who my local area rep is and to be able to speak to someone, e.g. just for support or moral support even, and all they replied was:

"In response to your recent contacts which have been forwarded by our Member Contact Centre and I can confirm that there are no further routes via Prospect for the matters you have raised.

Kind regards"

  • totally abandoned. Not even assessing the matter at all. Not even telling me who is my local rep.

Just to say, I do not recommend this union any more. It's appallingly to just cut someone off in that manner and especially when I was dealing with depression. They claim it was on their website, that material rule, but even now when I checked it says only to call their helpdesk, nothing about you will be left abandoned if you fail to do this. Quite an important clause to omit if relevant.

I give up, they clearly do not care.
