Sick note - send to my manager or just HR?

I’m being signed off work sick for a personal operation next week for a month. I’ve sent my doctor’s sick note to HR, but was wondering if I also need to send it to my manager? I don’t want her to know the subject of why I’m off sick.

Line manager is usual: you can ask the dr not to specify the nature of the procedure, I did this after a mc when I had a horrible line manager.

Generally you don't need to share it with your line manager. However, I think it would be wise to tell HR you'd like to keep it confidential. You can then just tell you manager that you are off sick and sent a your note to HR. Hope you get better soon!

You can just tell your manager that you have sent your cert to HR

Although with a mc, isn't it pregnancy related and therefore different category (not against sick record).

I'd get your GP to work the Fit Note generically.

I'm sure most HR depts are discrete but if you want to keep things really confidential, you have no guarantee your LM won't talk to HR and they spill the beans. If it's non-specific nobody needs to know.

Sorry "word" not work

Thanks for your replies everyone! Unfortunately, the name of the Clinic at the top of the sick note says the area of treatment, so even though the note is worded generically it still rather gives it away...

We also have to enter absences into the company’s performance management system, and have to choose a category for reason of absence. My manager will find out from this, unless I choose ‘Other’ instead of the actual reason.
