How do they work?

Do you have an eye test, then produce the voucher to go towards the cost of your frames?

I work in an opticians. Yes you have an eye test, and they will give you a voucher to go towards the cost of your glasses. NHS vouchers are for children, people on pension credit or income support. It usually covers the full cost of a standard pair of glasses or if you want designer frames or higher index lenses etc you pay the difference. Hope this helps!

I work for the NHS, and silly me forgot they provide optician vouchers until I booked and had an eye test at Boots.

I bought some lovely glasses, then only noticed the sign above some frames saying “NHS voucher friendly” or something or other..
If I took in my prescription to work, would I get a voucher, so I can buy a spare pair?

Depends what vouchers they offer at work? Are they for a free eye test rather than for the glasses themselves? You normally have to qualify for a voucher towards the price of glasses

You will only be entitled to a voucher towards your glasses if you need them for VDU work. So, in my case, my glasses are for long distance, so I am not entitled to a voucher for glasses.

When I've worked in organisations that offer eye care vouchers the process is that you ask for an eye test voucher from your employer,your optician will give you a form which states that you need glasses for VDU work and your employer will give reimburse you a certain amount of money.

I don't work for the NHS but I do work in the public sector, my employer offers a free eye test and £20 off your glasses however the voucher they provide can only be used at Specsavers.

The NHS vouchers I think you've seen the sign for are usually for people who meet particular criteria, benefits family history or age

Not generally for NHS employees (I think I'm right in saying you said you were nhs staff?)

However some places will do individual offers for nhs staff, eg 10% discount or depending on the use you maybe entitled to claim some of the cost through work via HR

If you work for the NHS and use a VDU and you need glasses to read then your trust will have a policy on how to get the voucher. Ask your manager or search on the trust intranet under occ health.

NHS vouchers are not for people who work for the NHS, they are for people on certain benefits and children under 16/18 in full time eduction.

Staff in NHS (& other areas) who use VDUs get free eye tests and help towards paying for glasses. It's a different scheme from the one you are thinking of.
