Guilt over resigning.

I started a new job 5 months ago. I hate it and the pay is rubbish, I took it because of term time only school hours and because I wanted to get experience of working in a school with a view to maybe retraining to become a teacher.

I've decided a school environment is not for me. And today I've been offered an amazing opportunity in my original sciencific field. It's not an opportunity that's going to present itself often, I need to take it and want to take it.

I feel so bad about resigning, is this normal? I just need to get over it right?

Yep. If they can't cover for you then that's on them, they should be prepared for anyone leaving - particularly when the pay is rubbish.

Dance off to your new opportunity and don't look back!

Nobody is irreplaceable. Go. Someone else will love that job that’s not for you.

If it's a term time only job they will have loads of good applicants for it. They'll replace you easily, don't worry!
