NHS or Aldi? Need a new direction.

Which would you choose? Similar hours, NHS better money but a commute.

Has anyone got a good or bad experience from working for either of these to help me make my decision?

Just to clarify that we are talking about Aldi the store and NHS as in the NHS?

You need to factor in commuting costs, as well as time. An hour each way at a cost of several hundred pounds a month isn't going to make it worthwhile. Yet the NHS offers good maternity and sick may benefits and there is always room for progression?

Yes, store assistant in Aldi and NHS.

The pension is a big positive for me, and the possibility of progression.

I did once overhead an Aldi storeperson saying she had left her Band 2 NHS job and had never been more relaxed in her life

Seriously though, I'd go NHS. Decent holidays, pension, work-life balance. In Aldi your festive season would be buggered, for starters.

Apply for both and see which one you get.

I have applied for both, my heart says nhs but Aldi make out that they are amazing employers, which naturally they would that's why i posted on here.

@HermioneWeasley I know several Aldi staff and they're all happy. It's hard work though, you definitely earn your money.

Is this a full time position OP or part time? What kind of role in the NHS?

Both part time as that's all I could find, and the NHS one is a nursing assistant type thing, they train alongside work.

The impression I got about the Aldi one is that it's hard work, which I'm not against but that is sort of the reason why I'm leaving my self employed job, it's physically hard and taking a toll.

Maybe speak to a few nursing assistants before applying. What do you know about the role?

I know that the days are longer but there's less of them, and although it's not sitting down at all, it won't be as bad as what i do now. You're right that i need to speak to a few people, I'm limited time wise as the closing date is next week.

I know a few people who work for Aldi and they say it's great. I also know a nurse who left to work at Lidl because the pay was better

If you are looking for a less physical job then nursing assistant is not the answer, you will be run ragged its a tough heavy job. Im an rn and been in nhs 20+ yrs. Na work is not easy. 12hrs constant on ur feet, 40min break in that time, buzzers constantly going like you haven't got enough hands. If ur still thinking nhs you will earn every penny.

@Lifeisnotsimple it's a donor carer job. So definitely physical but shifts aren't as long and not as many days, i think!

I know several HCAs (the old title for nursing asst) who love the job. One of them has a PhD so not like HCA is their only job option.

Donor carer takes blood from donors in the mobile units that go round towns.

The nhs trains staff to be able to do this, it's also about being a people person and encouraging donors to return. Plus all the admin etc.

Great time to join if you want to progress at the moment as they are crying out for staff. Lots of training opportunities. Could train to become a nurse if you wanted to. Pay not great but holidays, pension and the few other benefits are all good.

My sister retrained a few years ago and loves it.

Depends on what you want to do though. Helping and encouraging people or lugging around cans of baked beans?

I have an interview for Aldi and I've applied for one NHS job and checking daily for more.

I'm tempted to do the Aldi one whilst looking or possibly studying towards getting into the nhs.
