What are they? (No help I know but I'm intrigued, is it like General Studies?)

Is it literacy and numeracy? Or life skills?

I looked into it as I previously taught English overseas, decided to do a primary PGCE instead. Learn direct were very helpful and if you have any more specific questions I could try to answr them.
