Self Employed & Returning to Work

I've tried googling this and am not coming up with any clear answers, so wondered if anyone else has been in the same position.

I have been self employed for over 10 years, my baby is almost 6 months old and i'm getting ready to go back to work.

From what i've read you are entitled to 10 KIT days

Could this be 1 working day a week for the next 10 weeks?
If so, it's possible I will receive some commissions during this time - is there an earning cap on what I could receive? I might well earn nothing.
Who do I notify that i'm returning to work and how much notice do I need to give?
Any tips on making this work to my financial advantage - suddenly stopping maternity pay and not knowing when I might make some money is worrying!
Any advice appreciated.
I'm a sole trader.
