Career Change - how hard is it?

I worked as a Solicitor for years, and decided to take a career break to have children. Whilst off with the children, I decided that I didn’t wasn’t to return to my previous career, and fancied doing something completely different. In the last year or so, I must have applied for about 40 jobs, and have never got any further than interview stage twice. At the moment I’m currently working as a Supermarket Assistant, as I thought it might be easier to get a job whilst employed, but I’m just not getting anywhere. Has anyone changed career successfully, and are there anything th8ngs I should be doing please? Thanks

What sort of career are you looking for?

I am trying but not having any luck so far. I was very successful and senior in my first career and I think that does me no favours now.

I do know people, including my husband, who changed careers in early 30s, before they had become too senior in their first careers and that seems to have worked out quite well.

Yes but what are you looking to do in your new career?

Also, how are you building a network with those in your target field? I've not gotten a good job by just apply to roles posted online. I've always gotten to know hiring managers and applied through them or with them back my application through the main system.

It probably would be easier to move field if you were working in your specialist field, assuming that what you want to move to is a professional role.
