Crying and shaking re leaving work tonight... who is to blame? Car left behind

I'm several weeks into a new job, famous large retailer (please don't ask me to name) and so far they have been pretty good to work for.
Mon-Fri we can use the store's regular car park (ie the customers one)
Weekends are too busy so we park at the store's depot, 20 minutes walk away. A shuttle service is laid on from store to here, although if traffic is bad , staff will often end up walking in ; not an issue in daylight. HR say they'd rather we use the shuttle than walk (it's not a great area, dodgy underpass, badly lit at night etc..they know a few eves ago I was approached for money in the regular car park)
I always finish at night (as work late afternoon to late eve shifts) and my hours have been extended slightly, however, I've always made the last shuttle back to the depot. I've had chats with the drivers and they always say they have a good idea of who is left in the store and can't go (home) until the last day/eve staff are out. Also a tannoy announcement is made to remind us re the last bus.
I can't leave until my department is tidy for the next morning and all the stock recovery is finished. Particularly busy tonight and I worked alone as they are short staffed. As often happens but tonight was busier. (I'm the only dept that doesn't have a team..it's just me and now a new part timer who won't be doing lates)
I stayed half an hour late, as I often do, as I say, I can't leave until things are done, I don't have an issue with this, I've been in retail for a decades and I know the score. (This isn't a martyr thing and I have missed the last bus back before, )
Anyway I finished and clocked out and asked at reception, had I just missed a bus. It finished for the night, half an hour ago, they said.
I was knackered after being on feet all night but went off to walk back to my car. The depot is on an industrial estate and poorly lit. No one was around at all. Nothing happened but I realise anything could have (also the depot is at the very back of the ind estate, tucked away) but I knew I could get into my car at the end. I felt vulnerable but didn't even see another person.
And then I got to the gates of the depot and they were locked.
At this point, standing out there in the dark, I did feel really vulnerable and burst into tears. I live 12 miles away and DP is away working most of the time.
Luckily DP got back last night. He came to get me but I don't think it's acceptable. If he'd not been around I'd have been stuck as no public transport to where we live (remote) and I don't have the money for a taxi. My car is obviously still there and as I'm back working tomorrow I won't be able to collect it until tomorrow evening.
I was standing out there in the dark for 45 minutes waiting for him. I'd had a gruelling shift, am not feeling well and had no energy at all to walk back to work, where no one would be able to help anyway as just the night workers and one security guy.
I will speak to HR tomorrow.
Would you be mad?
At no point since started work have I ever been told/warned that the depot's car park closed at a certain time. I assumed it was open 24/7 like the stores (where people work 24/7)
My issue isn't so much missing the bus as that was just something I'd suck up, I knew I'd have to work late. But not being able to get to my car is crazy!

sorry that is so long and waffling but I'm really upset and exhausted

ivykaty44 · 18/11/2018 01:08

Whoever locked the gates knew that a car was parked there and they wouldn’t be able to get there car - totally out of order

alltoomuchrightnow · 18/11/2018 01:14

I agree, Ivy, and they should have messaged the store and put out a tannoy announcement asking who the owner was

Melondramatic · 18/11/2018 01:14

Thats awful Flowers CakeBrewWine

I would be furious

I think late shifts should be able to park in the weekday close carpark.

BakedBeans47 · 18/11/2018 01:14

I’d be furious too and would just use the customer car park from now on.

ColdNeverBotheredMeAnyway · 18/11/2018 01:16

Oh love, I would have done exactly the same as you and burst into tears!

Yes it's unreasonable of them to lock up knowing a car was still there. Yes, if this is the norm - to lock at a certain time - then they should have told you that.

If your company can't provide you with an option of somewhere to park without getting locked out, that's clearly unreasonable. I would certainly take it up with them tomorrow if only to prevent it from happening to you or someone else again.

SmellyBumMum · 18/11/2018 01:20

Totally out of order on behalf of your employer. They have a duty of care to make sure you can get home safety. You need to speak to your line manager ASAP, especially as your method of getting home was bocked.

alltoomuchrightnow · 18/11/2018 01:20

I'm so angry
The whole reason I'm living and working in this part of the country is because of rape and violence. I moved away for a new life. I'm still trying to rebuild. This job was meant to finally be a new start after a few years of bad jobs and bullying (have posted before)
This may sound over dramatic as I'm actually home and safe but that's not the point
Anything could have happened
I have bad PTSD from my past
They don't know my past
They do know I was hassled a few days ago as I told security . And that was close to the store, not on a dark industrial estate 20 minutes away
I'm just angry to be put at risk
Just a simple announcement or checking could have changed this
If DP hadn't been around I dont know what I'd have done
Id have had to walk back and spend the night at work I guess

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 18/11/2018 01:28

Definitely not unreasonable. You were put in an absolutely unreasonable situation. I would certainly get on to HR and make some sort of official complaint to ensure it doesn’t happen to you again - or anyone else.

I work late pm and finish sometimes very VERY late. The firm I work for employs a shuttle bus to take us back to the car park (15-min walk) each night at intervals and we ALWAYS complain if it fails to show up.

As for having to leave your car and wait on some deserted industrial estate. Not on. What if, god forbid, something had happened to you?

LewisMam · 18/11/2018 01:31

Report to HR. This situation could have turned out very badly. They should not stop the bus until everyone who needs it has left (and turf people out for the last bus if necessary). And whoever locked the gate knowing an employee’s car was still there needs to be disciplined. Procedures need to be put in place to ensure the gates remain open until all cars have departed.

alltoomuchrightnow · 18/11/2018 01:36

Itslooking -
they are normally pretty good with the bus. I wonder if the driver was off sick or had to leave early but we always have a tannoy reminding us of last bus. These things happen. But as a lone woman not being able to get to my car, it was scary. The place is v dark, deserted and lots of bushes. As I said , the arse end of the estate.
There should have been communication between the store and the depot re my car

Alexthekid · 18/11/2018 01:41

That's totally awful. I'd definitely be addressing it with management. I think you're incredibly brave btw Thanks

nocoolnamesleft · 18/11/2018 01:42

That left you very vulnerable. Totally unacceptable.

allhdghd · 18/11/2018 01:44

Definitely raise this with HR. I would have been terrified if I'm honest.

alltoomuchrightnow · 18/11/2018 01:45

I did message my department's manager at the time (of discovering I was locked out) She hasn't got back to me. However she is not well and had got home after a gruelling shift too (elsewhere in the store), I have a feeling I probably woke her up.
All I can do is find someone from HR when I'm in tomorrow but there are less of them in on a Sunday. If no joy I'll certainly be emailing too

OP posts:
alltoomuchrightnow · 18/11/2018 01:48

It's hard as I'm new and on probation. But I'm absolutely fuming. This isn't a minor gripe, I can't just let it go. (and they have my car! DP is taking me in tomorrow.. If he wasn't around I'd not be able to get in, I don't have £30 for cab as we've just had a huge oil bill)
They are also known as a conscientious company.
I've been told to never walk back at night or use the underpass.
So to be locked out is shocking

OP posts:
Bodear · 18/11/2018 01:49

I can’t beleive that you’re not upset about the bus too. It’s unacceptable that they ask you to park somewhere that requires a potentially unsafe walk to your car. Even if the car park was open it’s absolutely not ok that there were was no transport. The rule should be that the bus waits until everyone has finished or that everyone gets the last bus and wht is not done is left until the morning. I’m genuinely appalled at that let alone the car park being closed which is terrible.

alltoomuchrightnow · 18/11/2018 01:50

They may say I shouldn't have stayed late. But Ive been late every shift I've done since started because someone left when I started, dropping them in it. Working alone means too much to do at end of night. So I had no choice but to leave late. That's how it is in retail. I'm an ex manager, now starting at the bottom in a huge company. I know how it works.
Not being able to get to my car is not how it should work.

OP posts:
alltoomuchrightnow · 18/11/2018 01:51

By the way they've alway been aware I've always had to work late because of short staffing so they do know the score. As a new person I'm running a v busy dept alone because the manager of it has her own regular dept to run

OP posts:
alltoomuchrightnow · 18/11/2018 01:54

Bodear , they've always made sure they announce to us on the shop floor what time the last bus will leave.
This def didn't happen today unless I was in the loo but they do it at different times, I always listen out for it.
So none of this is acceptable. I'm actually getting more angrier! I was standing out there in pitch black with bushes and empty buildings. Seeing my car through a padlocked gate only metres away

OP posts:
MistressDeeCee · 18/11/2018 01:54

What an awful situation OP. I felt anxious reading that so I can't even begin to imagine how you felt.

I really hope it's resolved quickly by HR. Totally unacceptable.
💐

alltoomuchrightnow · 18/11/2018 02:09

thanks for the replies
Need to try and get sleep but am so wound up
Will update after work tomorrow
wish me luck! (and getting car back, although I won't be so late out tomorrow due to Sunday trading)

OP posts:
allupsidedown · 18/11/2018 02:21

That is awful. I am glad you got home safely in the end but shudder to think what could have happened. I used to work in a nightclub so always coming out in the middle of the night. There was a policy that no-one could be left to walk to their car alone. We had to sign out to make sure no-one got left behind. The last group would often chip in to help tidy up together so everyone would get away. You perhaps don't mind staying and working on but if it then puts you in an unsafe position then it shouldn't be allowed.
Hope you get it sorted.

alltoomuchrightnow · 18/11/2018 03:32

3.30 am and I can't sleep , so wound up still
Don't want to have to do shift tomorrow (busiest working day) on no sleep
And want to have clear head to be able to discuss this at work
Argh! I'm so exhausted yet so wired!
