Working a second job whilst on SMP - is it allowed?

Hello!

I have one full time job (office work) which I will be beginning my SMP with soon.

As it's only statutory, this is of course not a lot (although better than nothing!), so I was wondering it is acceptable under the eyes of HMRC for me to work my second job occasionally (bar work) whilst I'm on SMP from the office job??

I've asked both of my employers and they are both unsure. Just wondering if anyone else has decided to do this and had no issues from the tax man?

Thanks! Star

No you can’t start a new job and keep receiving SMP. You can do self-employed work, but nothing like a bar job.

Okay, that makes sense. However I wouldn't be starting a new job. I'm already employed by both of these places... still the same rule?

Sorry if I didn't make the clear in the original post!

No you cant have any PAYE income bar self employment while on SMP. You may be able to claim smp from both jobs though!

Ignore above - as you are already employed its different.

If you only qualify for SMP from one employer (A), you can continue to work for an employer (B) who does not pay you SMP, providing you were employed by that employer (B) in the 15th week before your baby was due. If you are getting SMP from one employer (A) and working for an employer (C) who did not employ you in the 15th week before your baby is due, see next question.

Fantastic! I am pretty sure I've exceeded the 15 week mark, but I will double check with second employer.

Thanks very much for your help!
