Saturday Job for a 14 year old.

Just moved to the UK and I hear that it is legal for a 14 year old to get a Saturday job. I think it's a great idea and I'd love to help my son find one in the Winchester area. After an initial search (just asking around), it seems that most businesses won't employ any younger than 16. Any tips of where he can find one? Thanks!

It varies from local authority to local authority, but often the business has to apply to child employment for a licence to employ anyone between 13 and 15. From a conversation I had with our local child employment officer 90% of their applications are from parents with their own businesses employing their own children. An indication that it is a hassle and really people only do where it directly benefits their own family.

We're not far from Winchester OP and I've been keeping my eye out for a Saturday job for my 14 yr old too, not found anything yet!!

Think you will find it difficult as there are restrictions to the hours they can work.

My DC did paper rounds.

My DS was a football referee although you do have to fork out for the course and the referee kit.

I think you will find it is very difficult to find anything for under 16s. The only friends of my dc who had jobs at 14 worked for friends or family.

My DC had a job in a shop at 14. He was given a temporary NI number and was on payroll. It is possible but hard to find.

Many charity shops will take 14 year olds - assuming getting a job is about experience, social skills and learning about work rather than earning cash.

Paper round?

My 13 year old girl babysits her little sister and brother at the weekends for money. She also does a small paper round occasionally and sells greeting cards at school during lunch time to earn a bit of cash for chocolate. Another option is to wash cars.

Round here most kids work from 13 / 14

My DDs both work in a Cafe - their friends work in hotels, cafes, pubs, old people’s homes, hair dresser and a shop. Small town and most paid quite well - a few working within family businesses lots not though.

One of the teachers at school actively recruits for a local race course - it’s only about 10 days a year and all in holidays but pretty much every kid at school gets asked and about 20-30 work there every year.

I think it’s really important for my DDs development that they have their own money and independence

My 14 year old works in a local family run shop. Not our family. He gets paid cash so I'mnot sure it has been done officially though. However, he enjoys the job and likes the cash better.

Its really tricky in our area. DS is 14 and has just started a Sunday paper round. He has to get up at 6.30am, deliver 20 papers and go and collect £5 from the shop. Its a lot of effort for £5 but all he could find.

I know that people in 14 year old DSs year work in local B&Bs doing cleaning and folding sheets etc. Think it’s mostly girls.

Sticking up, for skittle teams, might be worth asking in pubs that have an alley? Usually paid plus tips so not bad money for a 14yr old although they are usually required until about 11pm and usually on a weeknight.
