New Team Structure

Just curious to know if this is normal. A team I work in all report to director, it was announced in a group call that we would now all be reporting to one of the team members who has now been promoted to a newly created manager role.
I would have expected to be told individually, is it normal to announce this sort of change in this way?

Seems sensible to me. If you have to tell lots of people the same thing it’s better to ensure they all hear it at once in a controlled way, otherwise those who get told first will start talking to those who haven’t heard yet.

I’d be more concerned about not having the opportunity to apply for the post than whether others heard the news at the same time as me or not!
