Zero hour contract notice period?

Hi, I’m new to posting but have read a few posts. I’m just a bit lost as I handed in my notice at work after being offered another job. I gave 2 weeks notice and accepted the new job. Due to the stress levels at my current workplace I’ve got colleagues covering my last 2 shifts which they were more than happy to do. My new employer has asked me if I can now do training in this time so we could move up my start date for as soon as my notice ends. My colleague says because I’m on a zero hour contract I can say yes because they can’t stop me from having a second job. Is this true? I would be delighted to start my new job as soon as possible.

Zero hours is just that, you aren't guaranteed work, your employer can say we dont need you today but can you work the rest of the week. It also means you can walk away without having to serve any notice, you have no obligation.

Don't take a colleague's word for your Ts and Cs, they may be right but you need to check your own contract. Do you have anything in writing if so, check it to make certain you are on zero hours basis. Just a bit concerned you aren't certain, which suggests it hasn't been made clear to you by your employer that there's no notice period to serve.

You need to check what your contract says. If it says you are free to decline the offer of work, just do that and tell your employer you are no longer available from whatever date you like.

Thank you, I have checked my contract it says refer to company policies on hours, I’ve ask for a copy but the owner just stated it zero hours everyone’s is. I have already told them “don’t ring me” after my shift on Tuesday, by the I will have worked 11 days of my notice which hopefully means it can’t look too bad in a reference
