what sort of job is it?

PamT · 14/08/2004 10:06

I went back to work last year after 7 years as a SAHM and a few years before that with no interviews so it was a bit of a shock to the system to go into interviews again. I had a couple of local government interviews where the questions were "in the advertised post you might be asked to do.../you might be faced with.... give examples of how you have managed this in the past" and you are expected to show how you have experience of various scenarios and duties in previous jobs. I then went for an interview as a temp with my local utility provider. This was very informal and was more of a chat with my boss to be. I got the job, but I think they were pretty desperate, but at least it gave me the status of being currently employed which I think had put others off me, having been away from the market for so long.

I was interviewed last December for my current local government job, the interview was less formal than previously but still along the same lines of "show how you have done....", they were very good though and had written the questions on cards for me to refer back to during the answer (it's terrible when your mind goes blank).

Wear something smart that you feel comfortable in and try to find out as much as possible before hand as to what the job involves. Good luck.

Congratulations, it is nerve wracking, ive just started doing them again after 3 years of not working and in all honesty the last job i have gone for is the first one ive ever really, really wanted. And i got it! Was very nervous, but read up on it the night before, got all clothes out and ironed ready, comfortable ones as PamT has suggested got there a couple of mins early and even managed to crack a couple of jokes. Good luck!!

Congrats nightowl. I dont have many suggestions on what they would ask you, but Ive had a couple of interviews recently. Wear something really smart, like a suit if you have one. Take deep breaths before you go in, and take your time whilst thinking of your answers for questions. Someone suggested to me to ask for a drink like a glass of water so you can sip on it whilst thinking. If they've given you a brief job description, then think of why you're suitable for the job. Sending you lots of luck and hugs!! xxx
