How much to charge for web copywriting service.

Hi,
Can I ask copywriters out there what they charge for web content? Say for a landing page?

I am about to start (experienced journalist with some knowldge of SEO) and need an idea of what to charge. Initially for start up/small businesses to find my feet.

Also fees for blogs 250 -500 words. Should I charge per job or per day? Realise some jobs will take more research than others.

Or put another way does anyone pay a copywriter and what do they charge?

I used to get £10 per short article (SEO friendly stuff) and used to be able to write around 10 a day. They were around 250-300 words from what I recall. This was about 5+ years ago though so may well have changed now.

I'm trying to remember my daily rate for you, when I did in-house stuff, and I'm struggling but think it might have been around the £100 per day mark...

I charge £250 per 500 word blog post and was thinking that wasn't enough! Takes me 2 hours, 3 if I have to research.

£250 per 2 hours so £125 per hour sounds an awful lot to me! I've not been doing it for 5 years though so may well be completely out of touch.

I charge £200-300 depending on how much research is needed.

The organisation I work for offers £20 per hour. I refuse to do less than £50 for a job - 2.5 hours. They actually take a bit longer, but I want the work...

I think there is a bit of a race to the bottom in this work - that rate is better than I would get on People per Hour.

I just do the textual bits btw, I don’t make it into a blog.

Does anyone here work via an agency or similar?

There seems to be a big variation. I guess if I was commissioning it I'd rather pay a flat rate rather than per hour/word as this could rack up.

OllyBJolly - are you freelance and how long have you been doing it? Rates sound great!

MaybeDoctor - what do you mean when you say you do the textual bits?

I'd be setting up on my own and starting with small local businesses before progressing on.

Text - just writing the content in Word, rather than as a WordPress page, formatted etc

Not copywriting but similar - I'd charge £250 to write a 600-word press release & email it to journalists. I'd allow 3.5 hours to do it.

Thank you extinctspecies. I plan to offer press release writing to my clients too.

Do you send it to unlimited media outlets (or do you specify how many in your price) and do you follow them up?

I've done this for a charity and found following them up can be very time consuming. Plus dealing with media on the day! It all adds up. We did get coverage though.

Freelance and 20 years experience in my field. Been writing for 14 years but only offering it as a service since 2010. It's not my main fee generator but probably brings in a useful £10k per year.

hickory77 I work in a very niche market & send the releases to my bespoke list. I usually have a good idea of how newsworthy it is, and I will follow up with outlets who I believe will be interested if they don't pick it up.
I know my market very well.

Any tips for getting better rates/more business for pure content writing?

Thinking of trying a couple of web agencies.
