Work experience in your 30s?

Has anybody done media/magazine work experience later on in life? I am trying to switch up from years of ad sales and marketing and eventually make freelance feature writing my main “job”.

I’m doing ok with sons couple of years of freelance copywriting and just got my first print commission but I really want to aim bigger and do a week or two work placement at a national magazine. Ideally to get some bits in my portfolio, make some contacts and generally get a feel for how things have changed (last time I did work at a national magazine digital was barely a thing.)

I’ve got contacts in the industry and logistically with the kids it’ll be hard, but feasible (I’m aiming for next year if I’m totally honest). However I just have this niggling doubt that a) I shouldn’t be working for free at this point really and b) I’ll be laughed at for being 33 years old and applying to make tea and coffee.

Can anybody help at all?
