Applying for a post in another department

What's the rule or etiquette about informing your own manager if you apply for a post in another department?

And how do you answer the 'why?' question when the true answer is 'because I'm fed up of working under you and your appalling management'.

It would be a sideways move, with no career progression.

CS?

Your company might have an internal recruitment procedure, in which case you should follow that.

Don't know r.e. reason - be honest? Or you find the department work more interesting than your current department

What is CS?

How can I be honest yet continue working in current dept if I don't get the job? I have a suspicion that at least two other colleagues from my dept are applying!

If you can't bring yourself to give the genuine reason for wanting to transfer then just tell a small lie, make life easy for yourself.

Any failings on the managers part would / should be picked up soon enough anyway. It doesn't matter who exposes them.

With us, when you click submit on the application form, it sends a copy to you and your current manager.

For why, I'd say something about wanting to widen my experience and knowledge.

Explain to your manager how the job fits your long term development aspirations and offers opportunities for progression that you feel would be a better match than what is on offer in your current role. Although you really enjoy your current role, you're looking at your long-term future with the company/organisation, blah, blah, etc.

CS will be Civil Service.
