HELP HELP EMPLOYMENT ISSUE

Hello everyone,
Just need confirmation I’m not going mad here, been off sick for a week and emailed sick note over to my boss straight away. I have worked for the same employee for over 10 years and only now am I seeing my colleagues true colours and just need some advice on what to do next.
So I’ve returned to work today and I was checking one of my colleagues emails to just make sure everything had been dealt when I came across an email from my boss to this colleague that she thinks my sick note is a load of bull and that if I’m unhappy and wanted to move departments which I don’t know this idea has come from tbh she would find someone as permanent to replace me which she said in this email would be more beneficial to my current department as I only work part time as I have a 3yr old. I didn’t think she was Doctor but maybe she secretly practiced as one grrrr. Obviously these emails are on my colleagues computer would this be evidence of constructive dismissal if I handed in my notice?
Thanks

Straight to HR. Do not even pass go. You shouldn't have to hand in your notice over this- they should.

How did you get access to your colleagues emails though?

daisychain01 · 17/05/2018 03:04

Not CD, don't hand in your notice over this. You can raise it either informally with your manager, to try and resolve directly, or via formal grievance. I would take the first option, it won't end well if you over react at this stage. Be calm and professional throughout,

Thank you for the reply’s, we don’t have passwords on our emails at work they are just auto downloaded on outlook.

Whatever happens, i'd be printing off a copy of the email

Does your employer not have an IT security policy? This open access to emails sounds very weird.

Really? So if someone made a complaint to HR about something, or was involved in a disciplinary from any angle, any mails would be open to everyone else? Or managers discussing budgets and payrises? That all sounds a bit... unusual.

I'd print off a copy to keep it safe in case anyone decides to tidy up, and I would report to HR, too.

A lot of companies have 'open' email these days. I.e. everyone has their own inbox as part of a larger shared account.

I assume that there are unwritten rules that personal matters aren't discussed over email so HR issues wouldn't usually be able to be read. Managers often have their own accounts that are separate.

Would drive me mad though, couldn't work somewhere where your inbox isn't your own!

EBearhug · 17/05/2018 13:12

We have shared mailboxes - but everyone has their own as well. I can't see that changing, because our departments can span a number of countries, some of whom have more rights to personal privacy at work than we do in the UK.

IsDaveThere · 18/05/2018 09:00

We havo our own email accounts but anyone who switched my computer on could get into mine (google has auto saved the password).

We would have questions to answer for logging into someone else's computer/account and reading their emails though, won't you get in trouble for doing that?

prh47bridge · 18/05/2018 11:26

I would be very surprised if they actually have open access to emails. That would only happen with Outlook if everyone uses the same username and password to access their PC. Outlook keeps the access details it uses in a private area for each user. If you login as user Fred you will see Fred's emails. To see Joe's emails you have to login as Joe (or have permission from Joe to view his mailbox).
