Notice period before probabtion ends

I am in a relatively new job (one month in). It was advertised as a fixed term role but I was told that there may be an option to extend at interview. I was offered and accepted the job and the chefs took months to complete. As it wasn’t for certain that the job would be permanent I explored my options and applied to go back to university in September, for which I’ve been accepted.

Since I’ve started all of my colleagues have said that they’ve been told I’m a permanent member of staff, pending passing probation of course, as it’s extremely likely the person whose role I’m covering isn’t going to return.

I have not told my employer of my plans to go back to University yet but I’m wondering how my notice period will work. My contract states that my notice period is four weeks but would that still count if I’d not passed probation? It doesn’t mentioned about before/after probation just the amount of notice required for certain grades. My probation review is at 3 months but I’m going to need to give my notice in before this. I don’t want to ask anyone at work about this before I’m ready as it will give the game away and I’m sure as we all know things can sometimes change.

Should I assume it will be a 4 week notice period regardless? It’s a council admin role if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance

Yes, your contractual notice will apply in the probationary period unless stated otherwise, so it will be four weeks.
