Part-time hours and bank holidays ...

Can someone please advise whether I'm right in thinking that if one works part-time hours then bank holidays are pro-rata. So, if you work a 2 day week you get 2/5 of your annual leave entitlement and 2/5 of bank holidays. And if you work part-time/shortened hours over say 4 days you get 4/5 of annual leave and 4/5 bank holidays. In each case you would 'owe' the company the bank holidays you don't get. To further complicate my question, if your day off is a Monday and say 80% of bank holidays fall on a Monday, then the company would owe you 4/5 of bank holidays (or whatever when you take out the b/hols which fall on days other than Mondays).

Sorry, I haven't explained this very well but I find it impossible to get my head around.

my part time staff get all their bank holidays. They get their bank holiday added to their annual leave to make life easier. I am a nurse manager btw so don't get bh off routinely

millie

at my firm, if you work mondays, you get bank hol mondays off no matter how many hours you work. You don't owe any, and those who DON'T work on mondays don't get a day in lieu.

I work 3 days a week adn get 3/5 of a full timers holiday entitlement

At my place of work the part timers have to take the bank holidays out of their annual leave. We get X amount of public holiday hours and Y amount of annual leave. Added together they get Z hours. The first thing we do is take off the public holidays and however many hours are left are annual leave.
I'm lucky in that I don't work a Monday so don't need to worry about Monday holidays but in truth we don't get all the holidays anyway. We only get Easter and Christmas and we're open all other holidays.
My jobsharer works the monday so she has to apply for Easter Monday and at Christmas if any of the days fall on a Monday.

I work 2 days a week and get 2/5 of what everyone else has. Also, as I don't work on Monday's I get the bank holidays on top, again pro rata. This year, i'm getting 2 extra days I think in lieu of BH as 2 actually fall on the days I work so i'm effectively getting 4 extra days. Does that make sense? hth

DelGirl · 16/05/2007 00:10

so, annual entitlement is 10 days/5weeks. BH 2 days/1week and christmas day/boxing day as they fall on the days I work

You are not entitled by law to Bank Holidays off pro rata, tho some firms will honour it.

So for eg I have a colleague who works weds and Thurs and she really misses out, very rarely has a bank Hol.

The trick is to work just Monday and Friday that way you will catch all the Bank Hol Mons (4) plus Good Friday and usually a good bit of Christmas too (ie if CDay is a Fri/sat/sun/mon).

Thanks everyone for the information ... my own firm does honour bank holidays but it's a pay-back situation which, I think will work out most like Delgirl's arrangements. Thanks again.

Millie you are right. Everyone gets the same amount of proportion, whether you work a Mon, a Wed or a Fri. It is pro-rata'd, so that it is fair, whichever days you work.

MissGolightly · 16/05/2007 22:17

Hi Millie, at my company it works exactly as you have described.

DelGirl · 16/05/2007 22:18

imo, if you don't work on MOndays at least you get to choose when to take your extra days off, you don't have to take them at the same time as everyone else

Katymac · 17/05/2007 13:43

OK work this out for me

My ladies work different days and different hours on different days

One works Mondays they both work Fridays

How do I do thier Bank Holidays

If I do it so that they owe me money it deosn't seem fair

Help?

MissGolightly · 17/05/2007 13:55

KatyMac, I work a 3/5 jobshare on Monday-Tuesday-Weds so obviously most of the bank holidays fall in "my" half of the week, but I only have a right to 3/5 of them.

I can't come into the office on bank holidays, so what happens when I run out of bank holiday entitlement, is I can either choose to use my regular holiday allowance to cover them or I can take a pay cut for that day. My choice.

Obviously for my colleague who works Thursdays and Fridays it's great - she gets extra holiday allowance that she can take when she wants!

When I was teaching, and was PT, I only ever got a Bank Holiday if my work day landed on it. As I didn't work Mon.Fri it rarely did.

Now I work PT, same days off, but have different rules. I am now entitled to 0.5 of Bank Holidays regardless of if they fall on my days off. These are just added onto my holiday entitlement.

My collegaue does work Mondays and has same ruls. This means that if there is a Bank Holiday she has tot ake the day off, from her holiday entitlement (which includs BH allowance).

I think I have come up with a solution
