Should I quit?

I will start off by saying I love my job. I have been at my job for just under 2 years, but recently something happened which has left me very unwell.

I have been off for about 5 weeks in total, and have tried to go back but was not well enough and was forced to take more time off.

I've used up all my sick pay, and just generally feel like a liability because I do not know when I will know what is wrong/when I will get better. I am waiting on test results to find out if I have brain damage currently.

My managers have been very sympathetic, but I can't help feeling like they are beginning to get fed up with the whole thing. I honestly feel like such a liability and just generally a pain in the ass.

Should I quit and then they could hire someone more reliable? For context I could live for a little while without the wage but I love the job and wouldn't really have enough money to live too comfortably.

Thank you all, I am incredibly upset today about everything.

That sounds very difficult and i really hope you are ok. Could you speak to your manager and explain the situation. Would you be able to work less hours, take unpaid time off until you have a diagnosis. Have you any idea of the long term plan for working, and looked into claiming SSP. It sounds like you enjoy your job very much which is wonderful maybe there would be something similar they could find for you..

@wormery I'm going to try and speak to them tomorrow I'm just so worried about being MORE of a pain in the ass really as I know they could hire someone else who would love the job just as much and would also not be ill Sad

Thank you so much for replying to me it's been really getting me down today - I feel like I'm going to be hated for being such an inconvenience really.

Thank you again xx

No don't give up just yet- get your test results and medical advice first. 5 weeks in the grand scheme of things isn't that long.
Sorry you are going through this.

If you wait for results will that take you over 2 years' service? Have you been offered adjustments such as a phased return?

daisychain01 · 06/05/2018 14:00

I definitely would not quit. Show them you are doing everything possible to get a diagnosis and treatment and you are motivated to get back to work. Unfortunately they will be acutely aware of you approaching 2 years service depending on how they are as an employer they may make the decision to part company or support you through this phase. Don't give them the reason by resigning as they may value you enough to stick by you.

Are you a member of a trade union? They could help support and advise you about your employers policies and procedures and support you in meetings.

Given you love your job, don't resign. See how your employer deals with the situation first.

I would not quit, because if you need to claim benefits they won't pay for a few weeks if you leave your job. I would wait and find out if your employer wants to keep you. Your employer may support your return to work or refer you to Occupational Health. It's in your interest to let your employer decide

Thank you all for the support. I will stay like you all suggested and wait until I find out what is actually wrong.

I actually went in today and worked and surprisingly managed it. I didn't think I'd manage that today so it feels like a small achievement.

I have another brain test this week so I will hopefully get a diagnosis/treatment soon. I really hope so anyway - it sounds ridiculous but honestly I'm so scared I'm going to die before anything is done. So scary
