Notice period being extended

DH moved departments 18 month ago and received a transfer letter he signed but no mention of a change to his notice period. They are now asking him to sign new agreement with a longer notice period, does he have to sign?

No, he can refuse. They may then try to force through the change, if there are sufficient business grounds why this is necessary.

Don’t forget that (assuming their notice period to him would ‘mirror’ the new longer one) this would benefit him if he is dismissed.

We are leaving the UK, house is on the market so the smaller notice period is better.

Everyone in his department is on the longer notice period. He alerted them to it last year when he wanted to check and they are only following up now.

He thinks he should just sign but I'd prefer if he didnt.
