Working until 6pm

peachypetite · 08/04/2018 21:15

I work 9-6 with a one hour unpaid lunch break. Taking a shorter break and finishing earlier isn't an option. It kills me. Does anyone else have to work until 6? I hate it!

Would they let you do 8-5?

Justabadwife · 08/04/2018 21:19

Meeee. I always have. It doesn't bother me. I work in a very busy shop and we close at 6pm.

peachypetite · 08/04/2018 21:25

I work in an office and none of my friends or family who also have office jobs work 40 hours. In all my previous jobs I've worked 37.5. I am coming to the end of my probation and think I will be honest about the effect it's having on my work-life balance.

I work 3days 8-6 and then a 8-5.30 on a Friday. It kills me. I get to Fridayband just want to go to bed. Due back from mat leave soon and I think they want me to do different hours possibly 8-8.

peachypetite · 08/04/2018 21:35

I don't have children yet but it makes me think it's completely incompatible! It's a 80 min commute on top.

I do and often later (around 9-8 ) but I can’t say it bothers me too much.

applesandpears56 · 08/04/2018 21:38

Are you joking? 9-6 is great hours

applesandpears56 · 08/04/2018 21:39

It’s your 80 minute commute that’s the problem!

NC4Now · 08/04/2018 21:40

I do sometimes. I work shifts and finish at 6 once a week. It’s my least favourite shift.

TalkFastThinkSlow · 08/04/2018 21:42

Are you joking?!

I refuse to work more than 37.5 hours per week.

I once had a job which was 9:30 - 5:30.
Should have been 9-5 but I was always late so I asked to change my hours.

Those are the days! These days, I do 9-5:30

notthatonethanks · 08/04/2018 21:43

Yes but it's unpaid overtime... I agree it's a killer but it's becoming the norm to work long hours.

The 80 min commute def won't be helping either!

peachypetite · 08/04/2018 21:45

Apples and pears - no I'm not joking. I've held several office based positions now and 9-6 hasn't been the norm, nor is is in my social circle.

You have obviously never run your own business.

PalePinkSwan · 08/04/2018 22:11

Ok, I had 6 different office based jobs, in 3 industries, and they were all as a minimum 9-6. In reality we stayed late (unpaid) in all of them almost every day. Think you’ve been unusually lucky tbh, 9-6 is very very normal.
Sounds like it’s the commute that is the problem.

peachypetite · 08/04/2018 22:20

Silly billy - what the hell? Working long hours to make money for yourself is completely different?!

TTCI · 08/04/2018 22:43

I work 10:30-8pm in a petrol station. I hate it.

NoHunsHereHun · 08/04/2018 22:51

I worked 9-6 in a retail head office role 15 years ago. It was shit, and I often worked far longer. Since then I have never had contractual hours of more than 37-37.5 but have twice recently declined interviews with companies where 40 hrs is the norm. IME they don't actually pay any more for this, and my role will always come with a certain amount of unpaid overtime on top, so no YANBU.

LonginesPrime · 08/04/2018 22:53

Does anyone else have to work until 6?

Of course lots of people work these hours. And lots of people work longer and shorter hours than that.

But if it's not working out for you, then obviously YANBU to do something about it.

overduemamma · 08/04/2018 22:56

I work 8am - 6pm with a 30min lunch break. On Friday I didn't leave till 6.45.. that's life I guess

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 08/04/2018 22:57

I’ve only come across 8-4, 9-5 and in the arts sector 10 to 6 (plus occasional evening events). So 9 to 6 does seem long.

peachypetite · 08/04/2018 22:59

Longines - I maybe should have made it clearer I was interested in hearing from those who work the traditional 9-5 office roles. Of course people work all sorts of hours!

OP posts:
peachypetite · 08/04/2018 22:59

Overdue - you work 8-6 five days a week?

OP posts:
CrumbliestFlakiest · 08/04/2018 23:03

I often work 7.30am -5pm, and don't consider that too bad. I try to leave at 4pm but its not always possible. I eat at my desk and don't take breaks.

Education, in case anyone is wondering.

Littlelambpeep · 08/04/2018 23:03

The commute is the killer op.is this the only job suitable ?

peachypetite · 08/04/2018 23:06

I live on the outskirts of London since we couldn't afford to buy closer. The commute isn't really that bad, I've always had commute of around an hour but never had to do it on top of spending nine hours a day at the office.
