Returning to work

I am due to return to work may 2018. My boss has refused me part time hours due to being unable to re-hire to replace my lost day.
I am really stuggling to cover childcare without having to put my child in nursery 5 days at a cost of over £500.
If i was to hand my notice into my job, would i qualify for any benefits until I was able to get a part time job?
Or, would i qualify for any benefits if i was to return to my job, then get a part time job later?

Please note i do not want to live on benefits forever, only until by baby is 3 then i would be able to return full time.

Thanks in advance!

If you resign you can't claim anything for 12 weeks

Have you started applying for alternative jobs already? To claim unemployment benefits you have to be available for work and actively seeking work. Obviously if you state you are available for work but have just resigned from a job, your availability will be looked at closely.
