14 year old son thinking of a career with the POLICE but he's colour blind

Hi,

Does anyone know if you can still join the police if you are colour blind? My 14 year old (year 9) son is interested and we have registered him on the police cadet force but it suddenly occurred to me that this career may not be an option for him as he is colour blind.
I have found an article, from Scotland, to say that this rule has been overturned in Scotland but I'm not sure about England. Does anyone know?

I'd hazard a guess it may vary by Force - the only restriction my local Force have (over and above the fitness bleep test that is standard for all Forces) is that you must have a BMI below 30.

That said, unless they can prove that a colour blind police officer poses a risk then I think it may also be classed as discrimination, hence why the rule was overturned in Scotland?

Yes he can and the fire brigade too. Neither are jobs I would be happy with my ds doing at all but he is interested in them. He is also completely colour blind. We were at an emergency service open day recently and both fire and police told him he can join even if colour blind, much to my annoyance!

Ok, thanks. I thought it shouldn't be a problem. He will be looking at other careers too. I have emailed our local force and they say it isn't a problem.
