Should I apply for this management position?

Hi everyone,

Ive worked for a company for 4 a few years, moved into a new role within the same company earlier this year.

The manager role for my team has become available (the current manager is on a secondment position- they are also someone i would regard as a friend).

I was speaking to head of department today & he asked if i was going to apply. To be honest I hadnt even considered it due to my inexperience in the team member role (its a big change from my old job & Im nowhere near competent at it) but its got me thinking.

Should I apply for it, knowing that i know barely anything about my current role, never mind the management position? I dont think the head was asking me because he thinks I should apply, I think it was just general conversation.

In addition, ive seen how much stress my manager is under in her role & i dont know how i would cope with leading the team when I don't really know much about the work! She said to me she would be MORE than happy for someone else on the team to apply because of the stress of it! (Didnt say i was thinking of applying). So also I'd feel like im taking her job away!

I know I'm the only person who could decide but other people's perspectives would be much appreciated!

You could always apply and if asked to an interview could dig a little deeper about the post. There’s no obligation if offered and you said no.
