Dependent/carer leave

So if schools are closed due to the weather is there a legal right to take leave to look after your child if you don’t get prior notice (eg the school says they are shut in the morning)

It’s not really short notice though. There were weather warnings for days. Where I work we wouldn’t refuse annual leave if you can’t make other arrangements but we wouldn’t grant dependants leave. Dependants leave is one maybe two at most to make alternative arrangements.

And it is for short notice problems like child being sick in the night and unable to go to school.

Dependants leave should definitely be granted yes, because you don’t know until that morning that you’ll need care for the children.

Weather warnings a few days before indicating that it’s a possibility the school might be shut certainly wouldn’t constitute sufficient notice to refuse to allow someone to take dependants leave.
