Part timers and training

If a course is running for 1/2 the staff, how 'right' is it that it is only full time staff are attending???? (participants are chosen regardless of whther they requested it or not.

training should be given on a "needs" basis.

If they are stopping people getting training they "need" just because they are p/t then they could be guilty of sex discrimination, given that the majority of p/ters are women.

Nearly all the staff are femal so it doesn't work.

We get a sheet and say what training we want adn then it usually doesn't happen. BUt the majority of people in my area said they wanted this course but the management want it spread across us all. IN one group there is 1 f/t and 2 p/t and its the full time member getting it (none of them had asked though).

being part of "management" (at least I was before m/l) - training isn't given based on "want" but on "need", as training budgets are invariably tight. Have you tried explaining to your manager why you have a specific need for this training? If you can make the case why you need it more than others in your group, they should then (if they are any good ) prioritise you for the training.

the other irritating thing i have found with p/t training is that whilst the employer will often offer to pay for the course, you are then expected to do it in your own time...... but then i am a nurse and it seems to have become pretty much standard practice in the nhs these days!

right it is a school, 40 support staff.Course is food hygiene and there are 25 places to spread across the school.Everyone needs to do it but certain peopl (my class and few other people in our end of the school) have been requesting it based on we do a lot of coooking with kids.
So far a few people have been told theyare doing it but notall the places.IN my class there are 8 staff and 2 are p/t and the others all do more cooking than we do BUT we do more than some of the people already picked so some people have been picked because they work in X rather than because they cook everyday.

Oh and the course will be 2 blocks after school so therefore unpaid.
