Leaving teaching

Does anyone have any experience of having left teaching? DH is a teacher and has the opportunity to interview for a role in a compelety different area. He enjoys the actual teaching but not all the politics and the stress. He cannot see himself teaching for life, or more than another 3/4 years.He does like the holidays that he can spend with our DS. He is a good teacher. He keeps asking me what I think but I just don't know! The new job would be more money, but DS would spend more time in childcare.

How old is your DS?

Has your DH tried other options, like a different school or sector?

I'd encourage him to go for it if he is unhappy with work and can't see anything changing for the better. I left after 8 years and it was a great decision.

I left teaching! Best thing I ever did. I don't have kids though, so the childcare thing wasn't a problem and I left to set up my own business. A lot less money, but a lot less bullshit to deal with.

So many teachers are almost brainwashed into believing it's all they can do, but the truth is most of them have an immense range of skills and an amazing work ethic, and businesses would be lucky to get them.

Yes, I left 2 years ago. I have a lovely new career and I am so glad I quit working in schools. Life is too short to spend in an unhappy job. The school holidays don't make up for the evenings, weekends and sleep lost. I've never worked in a job where I was constantly told I was shit no matter how hard I worked or how good I was. Glad to leave it behind me.

My best friend has just left teaching. Best thing she ever did.

If he wants to go for it, he should.

He can always go back to teaching if the new job doesn't work out.

And non teaching jobs have annual leave which can be used in school holidays (along with unpaid parental leave) to spend time with your children.
