Should I be moving to Devon?

Hi !
I am so confused! I currently live in South London. My life here feels miserable. I was thinking of relocating in Devon. I am originally from the Mediterranean but have been living in London for the past 7 years.
I am a single woman in her 40's. I am an Artist. Most of my business is on line. I am scared of this huge change. I would rent a place. I would like to have a bigger studio space with lots of light. I do not want to be isolated though. Are there people in their 40's there and what areas would you recommend? Or is Devon really not right for me? Thanks!

I would search on Mumsnet Local, for towns in Devon eg Exeter. You'll get advice/info from people who are either moving there or wanting to network in the area.

lol thanks! No idea why I posted that on employment issues!

Have you ever visited Devon? I would try and see a few places first. Do you drive? Public transport not great in south west. I met a lady who moved from London to a village in Dorset for a better quality of life, does not drive and was astounded to find out bus only twice a week. Devon is lovely. Exeter is a great city or perhaps a town near the coast.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Yes I was there this past weekend. I saw many places but the place I liked the most was Totnes. I hope it has everything I need!
Yes I noticed the problems with transportation. I do drive, but I won't have a car straight away. I would like to have a community of people around me. It is so lonely here in London. But I hope I am not expecting much. I guess it is what you make out of it. I saw Exeter. Yes lovely place, still more of a city feel and that is why I picked Totnes.

I really like Totnes too. Have a look at www.metro.co.uk/2017/12/9-reasons-you-should-move-to-Totnes-Devon-immediately.

I would say go for it.

NewDOOFUSfor18 · 24/01/2018 13:20

Ahh as an artist you will LOVE totnes! Transport links aren't that bad in Devon, and Totnes is pretty well linked to Torbay and Newton Abbot by train and bus.

I came on to say totnes, then saw your update.
There is a good sense of community, and if most of your sales are online it makes perfect sense. Lots of perle your age (and older )are there for a good connection to nature, community, like minded souls.
Rents can be quite high as it's popular, but you will be able to find a range of prices.
Brest of luck with it.

We relocated to north Devon 8 years ago now. Best thing we ever did. Lovely community 🙂

Ancienchateau · 25/01/2018 16:07

I saw your op and thought Totnes. Dartmoor or North Devon/Cornwall would be my choice though. I know quite a few artists in Devon and Cornwall. One is single and in her 50s. She is very successful both professionally and socially.
