Can someone help me work this out - Mat Allowance and shared parental leave

I’m going on mat leave in July and am eligible for maternity allowance only. I’d like us to take shared parental leave, with me taking six or seven months and DH then taking three.
As far as I can tell, when I go back to work MA stops. What money do we get when DH is off for the three months? Is his money based on his salary, as though he were a woman (so he’d get salary + SMP), or would he only be eligible for the 500ish MA?

Thanks in advance

It depends what his employer offers I think

Most employers offer only statutory pay for shared parental leave; some have moved to enhanced for all (aviva notably). I’m trying to persuade my employer to change policy at the moment but not getting anywhere...

Thank you both. He’s a civil servant and earns over double my salary. If he only gets SMP that might scupper our chances of shared leave. Bugger.

Good luck, ceeveebee

Shared parental pay for father is for 39 weeks less the number of weeks mother has taken and is paid at £140 a week or 90% of weekly pay whichever is LOWER.
SMP is not salary plus SMP it is SMP and if employer has contracted they may make it up to full pay.
SMP is only for 39 weeks. MA is also variable again max is 39 weeks but depending on your eligibility may only be 14 weeks or a reduced amount for 39 weeks.
Go onto the GOV.UK website and there is a calculator. And full explanation of eligability for SPL and MA.

Thank you willdoitinaminute, that’s helpful re: husband’s entitlement. The gov.uk site wasn’t clear on it.

Just to update, I’m delighted to find out that the civil service offer enhanced pay to dad’s as well as mums. So impressed and this means we will be able to do shared leave (couldn’t have afforded it otherwise).

Oh that’s good to hear, wish more companies would be as progressive

Yes, sorry didn’t mean to sound smug, ceeveebee. Shared leave is only going to be an option for the majority if employers start enhancing fathers’ pay.
