15 years to go to retirement and no real prospect of anything new

I like my job and I've done quite well in my field. Have probably reached the top of my ambition/ability. I'm approaching 50 so unless I move very soon there's little prospect of any new and exciting job between now and retirement.

I like my job, but the idea of doing it for the next 15 years is miserable. I worked for the same company for 20 years previously but I had 8 different jobs is that time. Other than that the longest I've stayed in 3 1/2 years.

I don't particularly want to retire early, but how am I going to do the same job for 15 years?

Or am I wrong, is it possible for people in their 50s to keep their career moving? That's probably dependent on the field, but I don't see it in mine (finance)

Reading your post what stands out is that you've reached the "top of your ambition/ability". That doesn't mean you need to stay in the same job, you could move sideways into a different role/company or, over time, you might develop new ambitions or skills. Or you might end up feeling that you've found your niche and be happy to stay where you are. Lots of people do this and are happy.

Yes I could move sideways, but realistically at 50+ in my field I think getting any new job would be a big ask.

...but funnily enough you have based this entire thread around your age and how many years you have until retirement

Please put aside your age and which year on the calendar you were born and focus on what you want to do, and how you can use all those years of experience you've gained - even if it involves change of some description such as retraining.

I'm sure you don't need career counselling from me, but it's never been a better time for someone of your age to get any job you want. Companies are increasingly using great techniques to be fairer in how they assess candidates, to eliminate factors such as age, race, sex, and focus on the person and what they offer

The Equality Act is there to put you on a level playing field.

At work can you do something like setting up a vote for fund raising and raise money for a charity ?

Organise a volunteer day that people can participate in locally

Complete a first aid course

Start something that helps improve the environment

Outside work do you have hobbies ?

Start a new hobby

Do something new or go somewhere thst you have always wanted to go

The things that interest you dont have to be at work

Or look around for a new job, busy keep quiet about it. Maybe you'll find something exciting.
