I've not done this for 10yrs!!!! arrrgh its a job advertised in my local paper so do I say

With reference to your advertisement in blah blah please find enclosed my completed app form.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course

any advice really really welcome tia oh and whats the correct layout for handwritten letters these days (not that they will have changed I hope)

I'd specify the position I was applying for in the covering letter, especially if they were advertising more than one vacancy.
