Sick note

A new employee who has been employed for 4 weeks called in sick last Friday.. He then came in for a few hours Monday morning- went home sick and did 2 hours today and then went home sick. Looks like he will also call in sick tomorrow. Given that he has been ill for 7 days (but has attended work for short periods during this time) should I be asking for a doctors note? Or would he need to have been absent for the full 7 days in a row and not attended for a few hours on two occasions?

Do you know the circumstances about why he keeps coming in and then going off sick again. Is it for the same illness? It seems a lot of coming and going for a new employee.

Normally it's 7days self cert then if the sickness continues a Fitnote from GP is needed, but you may need to have a back to work interview in case he's playing the system.
