Career Change - HELP!! Set up by myself vs Salaried

Hello everyone - after some advice.

In Sept I started a new job following some redundancies at my old company.

Pros of the new job:

  • Managerial role therefore giving me more experience
  • Wage is high at £40k
  • Flexible and currently only working 4 days (with 1 from home)

Cons of the new job:

  • Commute is horrendous, over 2 hours on most days
  • Can't be there as much for my 2 young kids
  • Even if I only work 4 days a week I'm often doing work out of hours, I get called incessantly when I'm out with my kids and I can never switch off
  • Travelling A LOT! Always in London, Wrexham or Manchester

DH and I would like to try for another baby next summer and DH is also being promised a big promotion at work which will see him busier and even less able to help out with the kids.

I have been looking around at freelance opportunities - I'm in digital/social media marketing and I have extensive experience but I'm unsure how to go about setting up by myself but not sure how? With the savings from taking my children out of childcare I would only need to earn around £500 per month for us to live comfortably as my husband wage would cover everything else.

I have also had a look at less demanding digital marketing role and I have been offered a role which would less travelling, easier and less stressful however the wage is much lower and there's not option to work from home like I have now.

Personally (knowing how the industry works) I know that my current £40k job is unsustainable particularly if we are blessed with another DS/DD and once DH gets this promotion. This means that I will likely have to quit and the future will be very uncertain.

The other less demanding job might be something I can keep going after another baby but the wage is really low and we are going to have a lot of childcare to pay.

I really don't know what to do: stay at my big job, save as much as I can then try to set up freelance if we are blessed with another DS/DD? Move now to a less demanding role which will ease the pressure on everyone and might be sustainable after I go back? Quit now and work on setting up freelance before TTC?
