proofreading - is a course required?

I am considering proofreading as a change of career. My currebt job partly involves checking documents for mistakes, etc so I have some related experience. I have seen a correspondance course and just wandered if anyone knew whether this was worthwhile or not? Thanks

Well I was a journalist and editor for twelve years and I never took one.....

Can you spell and spot errors? More importantly do you know how to read a sentence backwards; you will spot more errors if you read it backwards, because your brain sees the words, not the meanings.

wotzsname - Point taken.

tinkerbellhadpiles - thanks for the advice. I am just considering this as an option at the moment.
