working extra hours for no extra pay

is this legal? i only work on playschemes but the boss has decided we need to extend one hour. which is fair enough. but i noticed we aren't being paid any extra for this. the day rate is the same.

is this legal? when i asked her about it last week she said it was either that or no playscheme.

Do you have a contract? If so, does it say anything in that about increasing hours?

If not, your employer is seeking to change your terms and conditions of employment unilaterally and that is not legal.

no i don't have a contract and this has affected about 10 staff. i want to get facts before i go in all guns blazing. we are all casual staff. so it's not legal?

What are your terms and conditions of employment? It doesn't matter if you don't have a written contract although your employer is legally obliged to provide you with a written copy of your terms and conditions within 2 months of your starting work.

If you were employed on the basis that you are paid £x for working one day, 9am - 5pm with one hour for lunch and she then tries to increase those hours without increasing the pay commensurately, then she is in breach of employment law.

thanks freckle, she hasn't provided a contract at all and i've been working for her for 5 years. i've been stupid not to question it before. this is a local council too.
