Has anyone started out by trying several avenues then seeing what works best?

I was just wondering if anyone has experience of starting a business or freelancing in a way that is less 'planned' than all the guidance suggests? Lots of the advice out there is along the lines of: a) research b) write a business plan c) start up... But is there merit in just trying out a few avenues and seeing what works?

I am interested in building up a freelance offering alongside paid work. I already work part-time, so bring in an income from that. However, I would like to earn a bit more, in a flexible way.

I already do freelancing via People Per Hour, but what I am starting to do is just 'test the market' in a number of other areas to see if there is any interest. I am doing this in a low cost way via social media and the internet, so the start-up costs are low.

Has anyone had success from this approach?
Thanks.
