I would like to start a business soon whilst I am on maternity leave. I receive maternity allowance but it will end soon and I won't receive any money.

Well if you're not receiving any MA then there's no conflict. And there's nothing stopping you doing all the planning while getting MA so you're prepared to launch when it stops.

I started my business after my maternity allowance ran out. There is a lot of planning and organising to do beforehand so perhaps you could start looking at all aspects now. You are entitled to national insurance exemption if you have low earnings from self employment, and depending on your household income...there could be some tax credits to top you up while you get established. It is reasonable not to take profit for a year or two as you tend to have your overheads in the early years. Make sure you keep on top of book-keeping and register for tax self assessment. Also look into insurance for yourself and your place of business if that is relevant to your industry. Good luck!!!
