If you could invest in retraining, what would you do?

I'm slowly extricating myself from teaching as well as doing a bit of low-paid donkey work in the NHS which is all I've been able to get. Given restrictions in my part of the country on borrowing for a second degree, I have very limited options of two possible health professions - or I could self fund retraining in something else up to £10k or do a masters next year.

What would you do if you could retrain? I'm not really looking for advice on my position, just ideas. I have to say what with yesterday's vote against lifting the 1% pay cap, I'm starting to feel like a mug for being in the public sector.

One other thing to add is that CIPD (either HR or L&D) are possible areas of interest.

Hi Jennifer,

I'm just about to start working in the NHS and the pay cap does suck. It's certainly new to me having left a well paid career last October however, they are the only employer to offer me the part time hours I want which gives me the right balance with my family so I'll take that!

I'm also retraining to assist my future prospects as I worked for my previous company for 12 years so became very institutionalised so to speak. I'm actually starting college in September to do my CIPD. It's one evening a week so doesn't effect my ability to work.

I'm a teacher too and would retrain as an architect in a shot if we could afford it. I wish I'd done it from the start tbh.

I'd love to train to be a counsellor working with young people possibly along the lines of a play therapist. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Level 3 and will go from there.
