Being expected to cover absent staff

I work in a company that runs shifts. When members of staff are sick or on annual leave I am expected to cover as I am the shift-leader. Where do I stand with this in terms of HR. I feel pressurised to change my schedule at the last minute to fill gaps in. I feel they are trying to save money by not getting more staff in too. At the moment 3 people are off sick and I can't cover it all yet I am expected to.

What does your contract say?

Are you paid for the extra shifts?
