Should I accept permanent job??

I had been unemployed up until recently, I applied for lots of jobs, had lots of interviews and no offers.
Eventually I was offered a ftc maternity cover contract which I started a few weeks ago. My problem is, I had a phone call today from a company I interviewed for about a month before I got this ftc job, they have offered me a permanent contract.... What should I do?? I don't want to leave my current employer in the lurch but I also don't want to be unemployed again in 11 months time if I turn down the permanent role

You've got to look after number 1. They'd have no hesitation in giving you notice if they decided you were surplus to requirements or they didn't like you, and I say this as someone who works in HR dealing with managers who want to get rid of staff whenever they like quite often! So take the perm role if that's what you want to do.

It's usually easier for employers to find new staff than individuals to find new jobs, so if it's a choice between leaving them in the lurch now or yourself in the lurch in 11 months time then just give notice, well I know what I'd do.

It's a risk every employer takes when offering a FTC.

I definitely want to take the permanent position, I was gutted when I didn't hear anything after the interview.
I just feel bad as I've only been in the current role a few weeks and in my contract I have to give 4 weeks notice so I'm a bit worried about the awkward atmosphere!

Yes, accept the permanent job. If the shoe were on the other foot they wouldn't hesitate in chopping you also from someone who has seen similar manager situations repeatedly over the years.

Be careful not to burn your bridges though.

They may have offered you the job verbally, but get something firmed up formally before you jump ship, in case things go belly up and then you're worse off and back where you started.

I agree with the others, they wouldn't hesitate in getting rid of you.

I will wait until I've had a conditional offer (checks can take up to 6 weeks to get contract) and see what they say. I'm so nervous, I hate letting people down!

Yes, wait until you get the contract and check that is all in order before you hand your notice in.

Bear in mind that your current employer will know you are going to job hunt because you are on a ftc. Although they probably won't think you will leave so soon. However, it's the nature of the beast.
