Applying for Full and Part time positions at the same organisation?

I’m currently job hunting for something closer to home. My current commute is 30 miles each way and it’s killing me! I work full time.

I’ve seen a position advertised in a large organisation in the city where I live. The job is perfect, same kind of organisation where I work now (HE) This job is part time, but the job is pretty much exactly what I do now, but just 30 miles closer to home! I’ve crunched the numbers and I can make part time work viable because I’ll be saving on commuting and childcare costs etc. It would be perfect.

However, there is also another position going at the same place, full time. It’s not an exact match like the part time one, but good enough. But I have all the necessary qualifications and experience to apply. I think (I hope!) I’d be in with a decent chance with this one too, so I want to apply for this as well.

When looking at the jobs the contact for the jobs are the same person. I’ve looked at some other positions, and they have different people as a point of contact. So I think these jobs are in the same section if you follow me?

I really want to apply for both because ultimately I want to leave where I am. If given a choice I’d prefer the part time one. But, I wouldn’t turn down the full time one either, assuming I got anywhere with the application because I’d save three and a half hours a day commuting!

If it is the same person that is recruiting for both positions, I’m not sure how it would look if I was applying for both full and part time hours at the same time, though different jobs?

As a hiring manager it wouldn't put me off if someone did this as long as they were qualified for both roles. I'd only think it was odd if someone was applying for every role going including where they weren't a good fit.

If it were me I'd apply for both and if they question it say I am open minded about the hours but just really keen to work at the organisation (in a role matched to my skills) because I admire it so much, or something similar.

I feel your pain on the commute. I'm also currently trying to find a new job for the same reason! Been doing this commute for ten years and enough is enough!

Hi Red, thanks for your reply.

I will apply for both, fingers crossed I'll get somewhere with one or the other!
