Am due to go back to work soon and am making enquiries with boss as to hours etc. I've asked for two days a week, 9-4pm with 30 mins for lunch, so essentially its really the same as the day I did before...however, have spoken to them and its along the lines of that the hours I have requested will not be available as the options they are considering require cover 9am to 5pm with an hour for lunch to meet business requirements and they can't tell me what days are available for work.....I have sorted the nursery out now etc....

Are they allowed to do this? I thought you could request the days/hours you wanted, within reason? help!!!

You can request, but if they can prove the the business needs wont be met, they can refuse.

Hmm, just re-read. Were they the hours you worked prior to maternity leave? As I thought that you had a right to return on the same terms/conditions/hours etc as before?

I worked 9-5pm before, so I thought asking for 9-4pm wasn't such a bad compromise for a mum as lots of others leave at 3pm for the school run etc and as I have asked for only 30 mins for lunch, I will essentially be doing the same hours. There are specific jobs that need doing just before 5pm but lots of other people have been doing them while I've been on leave so I can't see a prob getting cover for that iykwim....I've taken the full year so I know I don't have the right to go back to same role but am so upset cos everyone else has gone back on the terms they wanted and it seems as if they are trying to make it diff for me. The boss (who is awful) doesn't like me anyway so I'm sure she's looking for an excuse to get rid....I didn't even go to HR first, went to her as thought it would be more friendly, no going over anyone's head etc but DH pointed out they now have me by the balls as they know what hours I want and that I've got a nursery place etc....wished had gone right to HR and then it could have gone down the correct, formal route.....maybe I should ring union rep....
